SETTLING POND DESIGN & THE “BFK BUNKER” CONCEPT

THE ONE “TRUISM” OF CONCRETE RECLAMATION: You can have the BEST Reclaimer with the WORST Settling Ponds, or the WORST Reclaimer with the BEST Settling Ponds, and you won’t be happy with EITHER! The System must be designed properly on both ends, they work hand-in-hand, and together they make up the Reclamation SYSTEM. That’s why we offer custom settling pond layouts Free-of-Charge, even before you decide to buy our reclaimer.  We want you to have a good solid pond system that will give you enough room to allow the solids to settle, while delivering relatively clean water, which can be used back at the reclaimer. Either send us a dimensional sketch of your existing pond system, or give us the plant address and we’ll scale it off of Google Maps, and give you a recommended layout drawing based on your specific plant.  It’s that simple. Below are downloads you can look at, that will help you design your own system, and you can look at basic “typical” layouts of our most popular products. Hey, even if you never buy a reclaimer, these pond layouts could help clean up your washout water.

STANDARD SETTLING POND SYSTEMS
The BFK Bunker is a relatively new concept, developed and tested in conjunction with customers and our flocculant suppliers. The idea is a simple one…..just the way we like them. Instead   of   draining   the   reclaimer   directly   into   a   pond,   drain   instead   into   an   above-grade   bunker.      Let   the   slurry   fill   up   inside   the   bunker,   which   slows   down the   flow   rate   of   the   slurry   stream.      This   slowing   down   of   the   slurry   stream   acts   just   like   a   bend   in   the   river   -   the   slower   flow   rate   can   not   carry   as   many solids, so they drop out of the stream.  One   method   is   to   cut   a   weir   in   the   wall   between   the   BFK   Bunker   and   the   first   Pond,   to   allow   the   slurry   stream   an   exit-way   when   the   bunker   becomes   full. At this   point,   the   slurry   then   drains   into   the   first   pond,   as   it   normally   would   from   the   reclaimer.      Another   method   is   to   build   the   bunker   walls   out   of   concrete blocks (who doesn’t have alot of those lying around?), which allows the slurry to seep thru the cracks in the blocks very slowly.  One   last   item   is   to   put   a   removable   steel   gate   as   one   of   the   4   bunker   walls   -   one   you   can   lift   out   with   a   chain   hooked   to   your   front-end   loader.     This   provides access for clean-out of the bunker, but also provides another place for the slurry to seep out - it’s easier to build a gate that is not sealed anyway! Let it sit and seep out all night long, and clean out the relatively dried material in the morning! With   this   simple   idea,   as   much   as   30   to   50%   of   your   fines   may   settle   out   before   they   reach   your   pond,   keeping   the   solids   load   on   your   pond   system   to   a minimum.     This   is   especially   important   when   you   are   operating   with   flocculants,   as   you   will   use   much   less,   or   a   filter   press,   which   has   a   hard   time   keeping   up with the reclaimer flow as it is.              THIS CONCEPT WORKS REALLY WELL WHEN USED WITH FLOCCULANTS! see here

Settling Pond Designs

Understand this: you can have the best reclaimer design, but with a bad pond system, you won’t be happy. Here at BFK we offer custom settling pond layouts specific to your plant, Free-of-Charge even before you make your purchasing decision. Give us your plant address and we’ll Map it on Google to determine your existing pond set-up. Or email us a basic layout of what you currently have, and we’ll take it from there.

Flocculants and Auto Flocc Feeders

We’ve been working with flocculants for more than 15 years, testing different types and learning how to make them work properly in your water system. We offer our own proprietary Automatic Flocculant Dispenser system that will dispense active flocc particles in your settling ponds. This helps to clean up your ponds, and settles fine particles like cement much more quickly than gravity alone. Check it out here, we think you’ll like it.

Slurry Dewatering Stand

Precasters, check this one out. This is the system you need to work in your plant where there is no need and no room for a settling pond. We realize you’re not ready-mix - you don’t usually need large, extensive settling ponds. The SDS is designed to collect the slurry from the reclaimer, capture the solids, and return clean water back to the reclaimer.  Works well with our Models M6 and R2 Reclaimers.

pH Control

The pH level of your water CAN be lowered. Using CO 2  to lower pH is a proven technique, and BFK is now pleased to offer the industry leader in pH Controls, the CO 2  Washout & Stormwater Treatment System from ATSI. ATSI has been in the pH game for over 20 years. It’s a perfect compliment to your Reclamation system.

Filter Press

We don’t build ‘em, we rarely even sell ‘em. But if you’re looking for one, we can hook you up with a press company that cuts no corners. We’ve heard all the sale pitches about automatic operation, no operator needed, pitch after pitch after pitch.   “Plug ‘em in and walk away”. Yeah right. Like BFK, they’ll lay it out for you, what to expect and what not to expect. No more, no less.
